@vala - Not to mention, Roy Batty's birthday is coming up. The fashion in Blade Runner was a little drab, but it was edgy. :)

@liw @emacsen @Cadeon @varx It's fine to object to turing complete languages for configs; there are other very "code-y" type non-turing-complete languages that include things like conditionals for configs. My original point was the smudginess between code and data not that you need to use turing completeness.

That said, I like turing complete languages for configs iff they are an *existing, general purpose language*. If it's a one-off language, that's bs.

@emacsen @Cadeon @varx Emacs's config file *is* code, and tbh most of the programs that I prefer to use recognize the importance of that because ultimately they'll add those "features" later, but worse. See also the popularity of "oh we'll just use YAML, this is just a config file" and then "oh no we need conditionals, let's add Jinja2 or some other ill-fitting templating language"

Heck, was it ansible or salt? One of them recently added *exception handling* to their YAML configs! *Come on.*

Almost can't believe my eyes, because this airline got it so right:

Side-note:

Instance is synonymous with server, and I think using the word "instance" was a bit of a mistake on my part during early Mastodon development. It's a programming term that less people are familiar with from other contexts. I suggest using "server" in your UIs

@gargron

A lot of people think "Decentralized" has the same meaning as "Evenly Distributed, or else it's a failure."

I'm sure people who think that are nice people, but they're not as smart as they think they are.

I started Mastodon because I believe in decentralization. The more servers there are, and the more people are spread throughout them, the stronger the network is.

I encourage people to join other servers, or start their own.

However! mastodon.social is the gateway for those who are undecided, or who don't yet know about decentralization. It is also my baby just like the software itself. I do not appreciate hostility towards it when promoting the benefits of other servers. Thanks
